German eVTOL developer Lilium N.V. has received the "Design Organisation Approval" from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA)—a certification recognizing organizations that meet EASA’s regulatory requirements. Approved entities are authorized to independently carry out engineering design, compliance verification, and airworthiness certification for aviation products, while also assuming ongoing responsibility for continued airworthiness. This milestone marks another significant step forward in Lilium’s journey toward advancing electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft—and underscores the growing momentum of electric aviation activities across Europe. Moreover, Alastair McIntosh, Lilium’s Chief Technology Officer and Head of the Design Organization, described the Design Organisation Approval as their "operational license," emphasizing that it confirms Lilium’s robust design capabilities, along with the necessary organizational structure, processes, expertise, resources, and rigorous standards. Looking ahead, Lilium’s Jet—a fully electric jet capable of accommodating up to 7 passengers—will accelerate its path to commercialization. With a cruising speed of 280 km/h and a range exceeding 250 kilometers on a single charge, the Lilium Jet is perfectly suited for intercity travel. In addition, Lilium recently announced a strategic partnership with Michelin focused on the research, development, and production of specialized tires tailored for the Lilium Jet. This collaboration is expected to further enhance the aircraft’s performance and ensure its seamless integration into the evolving landscape of sustainable aviation.
German eVTOL developer Lilium N.V. has received "Design Organisation Approval" from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, effectively granting it an "operational license." This milestone means the Lilium Jet electric jet aircraft is one step closer to commercialization. With a range of 250 kilometers, the aircraft is poised to become the go-to choice for intercity travel—much like Michelin tires have become a racer’s favorite.
