Domestically produced rotor-powered systems open the door to the marine market; Zhongke Power and Jinghui Shipbuilding join forces to tackle key challenges.

On December 2, Shaanxi Zhongke Power, fresh from concluding its participation in the 2025 Asia General Aviation Expo, immediately headed to Chongqing Jinghui Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. The two sides engaged in an in-depth discussion on the application of rotary engines in unmanned vessels and unmanned boats, marking the official entry of domestically developed, independently produced rotary power systems into the marine market.

As an innovative enterprise deeply rooted in the field of aviation rotor engines, Shaanxi Zhongke Power brings its independently developed technology—its newly launched 100kW rotor engine has already completed core technology validation. With its inherent advantages of high power density and low vibration, this engine has become an ideal choice for small-scale power equipment. Meanwhile, Chongqing Jinghui Shipbuilding, a leader in the new-energy vessel sector, not only holds 33 technological patents but has also successfully developed an unmanned floating debris removal vessel with centimeter-level positioning accuracy. The company boasts extensive experience in aluminum alloy shipbuilding and intelligent control systems. This collaboration represents a precise match between “power core” and “shipbuilding expertise.”

At the symposium, the technical teams from both sides focused on dissecting the adaptation logic behind three types of installation solutions in response to the diverse power requirements for marine applications. In particular, addressing the stringent space constraints of small unmanned boats, the team proposed an outboard-mounted propulsion solution—a compact, integrated power layout suspended at the stern of the vessel. This configuration not only conserves cabin space but also simplifies maintenance, perfectly complementing the rotor engine’s compact structural design. For 100-kW-class speedboats, the direct-drive inboard engine solution emerged as the preferred choice. By directly driving the propeller via a shaft system, this approach efficiently converts the rotor engine’s power into effective propulsion energy. Meanwhile, in official-use vessels where both power and stability are critical, the inboard-engine solution—with its low center-of-gravity advantage stemming from its built-in layout—was identified as a key area for further development. After multiple rounds of parameter verification, the two teams finally finalized three technical solutions tailored to meet different displacement and speed requirements.

This docking has reached a clear consensus on cooperation: both parties will share power parameters and ship design specifications, and will kick off joint trials first in two key areas—100kW speedboats and small electric boats. This initiative is expected to fill the gap in the application of domestically produced rotor propulsion systems in the marine sector, providing China’s waterborne equipment with a brand-new power option.

“The entry of rotary engines into the marine sector requires not only preserving their power density advantage of 3.5 kW/kg but also addressing the challenge of reliability in aquatic environments,” admitted the technical head of Zhongke Power. Although domestically produced rotary engines have now achieved a breakthrough by operating without failure for 1,000 hours, the operating conditions faced by ships—such as moisture-induced corrosion and continuous high loads—still place higher demands on sealing systems and thermal management technologies. To tackle these challenges, Jinghui Shipbuilding will leverage its expertise in marine anti-corrosion technologies and intelligent monitoring systems, working jointly with Zhongke Power to overcome bottlenecks in durability and cost-effectiveness.

According to industry data, China’s engine market size reached 5.87 billion yuan in 2025, with the share of marine propulsion systems rapidly increasing. Just the replacement of propulsion systems for coastal patrol vessels alone has created an annual market space of 1.5 billion yuan. Against this backdrop, the collaboration between the two companies not only aligns with the policy direction of the “Green Energy Transportation Development Plan,” but also holds great potential for gaining a first-mover advantage in the domestic high-end marine propulsion market.

In the future, the two sides will establish a joint R&D task force to focus on breakthroughs in core technologies for adapting rotary engines to marine applications. They plan to complete sea trials of a prototype by 2026. As these technological achievements are put into practice, domestically produced rotary engines could fundamentally transform the current situation in which small vessels rely heavily on imported power systems.
